Timers play a crucial role in ensuring fair and accurate competition at USA Swimming-sanctioned meets. Each race is timed to determine official results, and even if electronic timing is used, timers act as both a backup and a verification method.
Here’s what timers typically do:
Timers don’t need to be swim experts! Many are parent volunteers, and meets often begin with a quick timers’ meeting to explain procedures and answer questions. It’s a great way to get involved, support your swimmer, and contribute to the success of the meet. And it's a "front row" view of the action!
At all home meets, we're responsible for providing 2 timers per lane and a head timer; seventeen total. However, ideally we would have 34 timers so that timers only work half the meet.
At away meets, we're responsible for providing 1 timer per lane. Some pools are 6 lanes and some are 8.
If you'd be willing to time just half the meet, that means someone else doesn't have to time the whole thing!
