Timers

 Timers play a crucial role in ensuring fair and accurate competition at USA Swimming-sanctioned meets. Each race is timed to determine official results, and even if electronic timing is used, timers act as both a backup and a verification method.

Here’s what timers typically do:

• Start a Stopwatch when the race begins (usually with the sound of the starting horn).
   
• Visually Observe the Finish to stop the watch at the exact moment the swimmer touches the wall.
   
• Record Times and verify them on a lane timer sheet or clipboard, even if the electronic system is working.
   
• Help Maintain Accuracy by having multiple timers per lane to cross-check each other’s times.
   

Timers don’t need to be swim experts! Many are parent volunteers, and meets often begin with a quick timers’ meeting to explain procedures and answer questions. It’s a great way to get involved, support your swimmer, and contribute to the success of the meet. And it's a "front row" view of the action!
